UMC WordPress Theme Tutorials

Below are written instructions for the current UMC WordPress Theme being used across campus.

Initial Setup & Configuring Options
  1. Customize your theme with a few items that are required to get your theme up and running.
  2. In order to use this theme you must install & enable “Metabox” plugin. It should have been included when you received the theme.
  3. Go to ‘Appearance > Customize’ and confirm that your site name and tagline are correct (you may need to add a tagline to replace the generic one provided by WordPress).
  4. You will have the option to customize other features such as header background images, layout settings, social links, etc. at “Appearance > Current Theme Options”.
  5. In order for the navigation to work you’ll need to go set it up within the WordPress administration. There are two menus used in the UMC theme, the top and bottom menus. Both are required to be setup in order for the theme to function properly.
  6. Go to ‘Appearance > Menus’ and click on the option to “create a new menu”. It may make sense to name this first menu ‘Top Menu’ or ‘Main Navigation’. After you’ve clicked the Create Menu button you’ll see an option to select a theme location. Click the checkbox titled, ‘Primary Menu’, and then click the “Save Menu” button.
  7. Repeat this step for the bottom or footer menu, naming it something logical like ‘Bottom Menu’ or ‘Footer Menu’. Be sure to click the checkbox for ‘Footer Menu’ this time.
  8. At this point it’s assumed you have a working knowledge of how to build out your menu within WordPress. As you start adding pages and posts you can add those pages into your menu hierarchy.
  9. Setup Home Page
    • Create a blank page named “Home”.
    • Make sure the slug of the page is called “home”.
    • Update your “Reading” settings by going to “Settings > Reading > Front-page”.
    • Select your Front-page display settings as “Static Page”, and then select “Home” from the drop down for the Home page option.
  10. Setup Permalink settings at “Settings > Permalinks”. The University-standard has been to use a custom permalink structure using ‘/%category%/%postname%/’, however you are welcome to use whichever settings you prefer.
  11. Activate your plugins and start creating content.
  12. The plugins package provided by UMC are only suggested plugins and not necessary for the theme to function, however they greatly enhance the capabilities of the theme and the variety of display options. The supported Utah plugins are all titled, “Utah – { plugin name }”.
  13. To really utilize the University of Utah plugins’ capabilities it is necessary to install and activate the “Custom sidebars” plugin. Custom sidebars allows you to create as many widget area as you want and to include a widget on a single page/post, or categories, etc. The UMC Theme supports 5 widget areas that are automatically included on each page. You’ll need to setup and configure these sidebar areas.
  14. Activate the Custom sidebars plugin by first, making sure you have placed it in your ‘/wp-content/plugins’ directory, and then going to ‘Plugins’ in the WordPress admin. Go ahead and activate the plugin.
  15. You’ll need to configure the custom sidebars widget by going to “Appearance > Custom Sidebars”.
  16. You’ll need to select which sidebars are available for substitution. You’ll see a list in the top-left of the page that allows you to select different sidebar areas. Select the following five options:
    • Sidebar
    • Above Column Widgets
    • Below Column Widgets
    • Below Post Widgets
    • Above Post Widgets
Setting up the Image Marquee Slider
You can setup a full-width, variable height banner image slider on any page or post on your site.

  • When you are editing a post or a page you will see an option to edit the “Image Marquee Slider”. If you don’t see this option, click on Screen Options in the top right of the edit screen and make sure “Image Marquee Checkbox” is checked.
  • Upload images (up to 3) and add the meta data for the image such as Caption, Title, etc.
  • If you’d like to display text over the image slider, including a headline and subhead, you’ll need to edit the images you uploaded and make sure the “Image Marquee Meta” section is filled out. You may need to enable this option to display in your Screen Settings and scroll down the Edit Image screen in order to see this data (header text, subhead text, description text, etc.).

    4. Once the home page header slider is uploaded, click on the slider to edit the slides and change any slider settings. It is best to not change any of these options unless you know what you are doing. The Revolution Slider is an advanced slideshow and we can help make any edits you need or create new slideshows. For those of you comfortable with using an advanced editor, here is the documentation to help you make full use of the slideshow.
